Fire Extinguisher Sign
Fire extinguisher signs are those such signs as; fire extinguisher identification signs, fire point signs and signs stating the suitability of a type of fire extinguisher in the event of a fire, for example For use on Electrical fires. Fire extinguisher signs should be used to reinforce fire safety training of staff but are not intended to replace staff fire training.
The term fire extinguisher sign covers different types of fire safety signs. Fire fighting signs are square or rectangular shaped and more than 50 per cent red with a white pictogram. This type of fire extinguisher sign includes Fire point signs which tells the reader where the nearest group of fire fighting equipment is, and fire alarm call point signs which mark the point where anyone can raise the fire alarm. The most widely used type of fire extinguisher signs are fire extinguisher ID signs. This type of fire extinguisher sign should be placed over each fire extinguisher to inform the user which types of fire the fire extinguisher can and can not be safety used to put out. For example, a powder fire extinguisher sign, informs the reader that a powder fire extinguisher can be used on flammable solid such as wood, paper and fabric fires, flammable liquids such as paint or petrol, flammable gasses such as methane and propane and electrical fires. A water fire extinguisher ID sign would inform the reader that it is only safe to use that type of extinguisher on flammable solid fires and not to use a water fire extinguisher on flammable liquids, gasses or on electrical fires. As previously stated this type of fire extinguisher sign is only intended as a back up to fire safety training and not as a substitute.
This and most other type of fire extinguisher sign are available in a self adhesive finish which is best used on smooth walls. If this finish is not appropriate for your premises, you should purchase your fire extinguisher sign in a rigid plastic white or photo luminescent finish.
Advice on the use of fire extinguisher signs can be obtained from your local authority for fire protection. You should make certain that all your fire safety signs and fire extinguisher signs comply with current fire safety regulations including The Health and Safety (Safety signs and signals) Regulations 1996 and the European Safety Signs Directive (92/58/EEC). Most importantly, all employees should be conscious of the meaning of any fire extinguisher sign displayed in your premises.
