Warning Signs

Warning signs are essential for any workplace or premises where the public could face danger. Hazard warning signs are yellow and include such warnings as; Slippery floor, high voltage, mind the step, trip hazard, asbestos removal etc. The Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996 were formed to encourage all member states of the European Union to use standardised safety signs, warning signs and signals, so that safety signs, warning signs and signals, have the same meaning wherever they are used. The Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996 requires employers to provide specific safety signs and warning signs when there is a danger that can not be avoided or controlled by other means. There is no need to provide a safety sign or warning sign if it would not reduce the risk of danger to staff or public. The regulations also require employers to maintain the safety signs and warning signs which are provided by them, explain unknown signs to their staff and explain what the sign means. These particular regulations apply to all places and activities where people are employed, but exclude signs and labels used in relation with the supply of substances, products and equipment or the transport of dangerous goods. The HSE defines warning signs as - a sign giving warning of a hazard or danger (eg danger: electricity), Its intrinsic features are its triangular shape, containing a black pictogram and it must ure with at least 50% yellow background. Warning signs differ from manditory signs which are round and blue with white writing / pictogram. Warning signs are also distinct from prohibition signs which are red and circular with a diaganal line going through the pictogram. As with most signs, warning signs can come in a number of finishes including vinyl self adhesive and rigid plastic.
